Diagnosis

Today we received an official diagnosis for Watts: Infantile Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. When we have a little more time and energy, we'll write up a detailed post with some of the back-story (UPDATE: you can read about it HERE). For now, we're exhausted and sad, but also glad to know what's happening and have a bit clearer picture of treatment. Watts has been sedated since we arrived at Brenner and he's peacefully sleeping and not feeling any of the tests, etc. that have been done. It's heart-wrenching to watch and be able to do absolutely nothing. That's probably been the hardest part. We've been reading Psalm 77 a lot and feel encouraged by the honest lament there– we can relate to those feelings– and also the reminder that God is powerful, mysterious, and faithful in his love toward us. Please pray that we would have faith to lean into those realities.

PSALM 77

1 I cry aloud to God,
    aloud to God, and he will hear me.
In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
    in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying;
    my soul refuses to be comforted.
When I remember God, I moan;
    when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

You hold my eyelids open;
    I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
I consider the days of old,
    the years long ago.
I said, “Let me remember my song in the night;
    let me meditate in my heart.”
    Then my spirit made a diligent search:
“Will the Lord spurn forever,
    and never again be favorable?
Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
    Are his promises at an end for all time?
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
    Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

10 Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
    to the years of the right hand of the Most High.”

11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
12 I will ponder all your work,
    and meditate on your mighty deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is holy.
    What god is great like our God?
14 You are the God who works wonders;
    you have made known your might among the peoples.
15 You with your arm redeemed your people,
    the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

16 When the waters saw you, O God,
    when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
    indeed, the deep trembled.
17 The clouds poured out water;
    the skies gave forth thunder;
    your arrows flashed on every side.
18 The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
    your lightnings lighted up the world;
    the earth trembled and shook.
19 Your way was through the sea,
    your path through the great waters;
    yet your footprints were unseen.
20 You led your people like a flock
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

  1. God formed him in the womb and gave him that name for a reason, I reckon. Fight on, Gideon!

    Our prayers are with you continuously.

  2. Thank you for posting, though I know it must be hard to keep up with all of us while y'all are suffering this. I curse the miles between us all, though I wouldn't necessarily know what to do were I there. We are all praying here. Violet prayed yesterday, "God, please help Watts' blood cells to fight back, and when they can't fight back anymore, would You please fight for them!" We are praying for healing and more healing, and a mighty revelation of God among the hospital workers there.

  5. We've been praying with ferocity out here. Many of us. You all have a load of support going on. Thankful they've figured it out. Sad for the journey that you will be on for a while - but glad there IS a journey! Not to be cliche' but it's the "If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it!" point. I have a friend that went through the same thing with her twins about 30 years ago. Both are fine now. Prayers will continue, coast to coast! Love you all very much.

  6. "Arise, my soul, from deep distress,
    And banish every fear;
    He calls thee to His throne of grace,
    To spread thy sorrows there."

  7. Continuing to pray for little Watts. The Great Physician is aware of his needs, and God is indeed faithful. May His peace surround and fill you.

  8. My heart breaks for you and your family (I doubt you remember me, but we were in CBS together for a little while). Brenner's is an awesome place though, he is in good hands (in a variety of ways, as you know - earthly and heavenly). I wish your family the best and will be praying... strength, healing, hope, and peace.

  9. Dearest Hannah and Michael,
    Our hearts ache as we go before our loving Father's throne of grace pleading mercy and strength as you face this unbelievably overwhelming trial in your young lives. Please know you are seldom far from our thoughts and always on the mind and heart of our Great Shepherd.

    Lovingly,
    Nancee and Dickson

  10. He tends his flock like a shepherd:
    He gathers the lambs in his arms
    and carries them close to his heart;
    He gently leads those that have young.

  14. I don't know your family but upon reading a prayer request on FB, my heart started to ache for you as a mother. I was in tears as soon as I saw your baby boy's big blue eyes. I simply can't imagine, but please know that we're praying for you here in Arkansas and will not stop. Praying for complete healing. Praying for strength. Praying for rest. Praying for wisdom. Praying for peace that passes understanding as you walk through this.

  15. Lifting you up in prayer. We spent a lot of time at Brenners and the Ronald McDonald House with our daughter. Everyone there is wonderful. God provided us guidance daily through a tough journey and will do the same for you. Trust in his grace, mercy and love. -Anthony & Nancy Woodyard
